My recent paintings explore the possibility of blessing in the midst of chaos and question where does one get consolation and peace in the face of danger? We live in a world where tremendous beauty and unspeakable suffering co-exist.
I find my consolation in many ways, from the sacred images of my worship space, to the everyday objects and places that resonate with me personally. In painting these images, I enjoy using a very realistic controlled style for my small studies, while employing a more expressive technique for the larger pieces. It is important for me to work between these two styles to grow as a painter.
At this point in my career I am making the transition from being a mural painter and commissioned artist into focusing on my own body of work and pursuing gallery shows.
I am inspired by the work of these masters; Raphael, Botticelli, Caravaggio and Vermeer, they are unrivaled in their depiction of light on form and creation of allegorical compositions.
I am also inspired by my students at the Tacoma School of the Arts, their excitement and enthusiasm for learning humbles me and reminds me of the reason I began this journey into the art world. |
